The M1A is Springfield Armory's semi-automatic civilian version of the M14, and the SOCOM 16 is the most compact expression of it - a 16.25-inch barrel with a proprietary muzzle brake and a forward-mounted scout rail, in a black synthetic stock. Chambered in 7.62 NATO / .308, it puts full-power rifle performance into a package short enough to work in and out of a vehicle or through brush, which is exactly the thinking behind the original scout rifle concept. The M14's rotating bolt and op-rod system has a long service reputation, and the trigger is a genuinely good two-stage design. It is heavy, but it soaks up recoil accordingly.
