The 590S is Mossberg's answer to a long-standing problem: most pump shotguns will not reliably cycle mini shells. The 590S will run standard 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells alongside 1.75-inch minis with no adapter or conversion, which meaningfully increases how many rounds fit in the tube. This Compact configuration pairs an 18.5-inch barrel with a shorter stock for smaller-framed shooters, and the receiver is drilled and cut for a red dot.

Mossberg's tang-mounted safety is ambidextrous by design and falls naturally under the thumb, and the dual extractors and steel-to-steel lockup are why the 590 family has passed military torture testing for decades.
